The Summit County
Democratic Central Committee is comprised of elected
representatives known as Precinct Committeepersons (PC) from each
of the 475 precincts in Summit County. As an elected official,
the committeeperson is the voice of the people in the precinct and
a communication link between elected officials, the Democratic
Party, and the citizens of Summit County.
The PC is the front
line contact with Democratic residents of the precinct. In
addition, the position interfaces with precinct independents,
non-registered residents, and, at times, Republicans when dealing
with issues that are not exclusively partisan or when enlisting
support for electing Democrats. The role of the PC is to encourage
community involvement at a grassroots level by providing
information and an opportunity for participation in the political
process.
There are four basic
functions that are the responsibility of every precinct
committeeperson. These are:
-
Recruitment
and assignment of poll workers for all elections.
-
Distribution
of party candidate literature within the precinct.
-
Attendance
at meetings of the Summit County Democratic Party and Central
Committee.
-
Participation
in activities such as voter registration, get-out-the-vote
efforts, and yard sign locations that are coordinated by Summit
County Democratic Headquarters.
To become a PC for the
Democratic Party, you must be a registered voter who lives in the
precinct, you must have voted in a Democratic primary in one of
the prior two years, and you cannot have voted in any other
party's primary in the prior two years. Elections for PCs are held
every two years, in even year primaries.
If you are interested
in becoming a PC, please contact
Russell Balthis at
330-434-1311 (Summit County Democratic Headquarters).
