Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Ted Strickland will speak at the Akron Press Club on Monday, January 25. Lunch will be at 11:45 a. m., and the program will follow. There will be the opportunity for questions.

This event is co-sponsored with the University of Akron’s Ray C. Bliss Institute of Applied Politics and No Labels of Akron.
Strickland is a former governor of Ohio, congressman, minister and psychologist.

He received 60 percent of the vote in 2006 to become Ohio’s 68th governor, serving one term. Strickland represented Ohio’s Sixth Congressional District from 1993-1995 and from 1997-2007.

While he was governor, Strickland reduced the size of state government by 7 percent, or 5,000 employees. He also eliminated nearly 250 state business regulations and revised more than 1,800 to better accommodate growth. In 2008, he signed the state’s renewable portfolio standard, calling for 25% of the state’s energy to be produced by renewables by 2025.
Strickland is from Scioto County in Southern Ohio, one of nine children.

He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in history with a minor in psychology from Asbury College in Wilmore, Kentucky. He also holds a master’s degree in guidance counseling from the University of Kentucky, a Master of Divinity degree from Asbury Theological Seminary and a PhD in counseling form the University of Kentucky.

Strickland is an ordained minister in the United Methodist Church. He has worked as a counseling psychologist at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville.

He is married to Frances Strickland, an educational psychologist.
